Inpatient initiation of HIV therapy linked patients with substance use disorder to outpatient care
While hospital initiation of antiretroviral therapy was associated with increased frequency of HIV outpatient care visits in one trial of participants with HIV and substance use disorder, only 15% started antiretroviral therapy in the hospital, and viral suppression was not improved.

Women less likely than men to receive opioids while hospitalized
Hospitalized female patients were less likely to receive opioids for their pain, and when they did, they received 27.46 fewer morphine milligram equivalents per day on average than males, a study at an academic teaching hospital in California found.

Hospitalizations involving alcohol, other substance disorders increased by 57% in recent years
A study of U.S. acute care visits from 2014 to 2018 found that on average, 9.3 million (9.4%) ED visits and 1.4 million (11.9%) hospitalizations per year involved alcohol use disorders or substance use disorders, with rates of both increasing over time.
