ICU admission associated with worse outcomes in sepsis, better survival in acute respiratory failure
Patients admitted from the ED to the ICU with sepsis had worse survival and longer length of stay than those admitted to the wards, while patients with acute respiratory failure had better survival in the ICU than on a medical ward, a multicenter study found.

Moderate IV fluid resuscitation associated with less sepsis mortality
An industry-funded analysis of ICU patients admitted with sepsis and septic shock found that those who received a moderate amount of IV fluid on day 1 had a 2.5% reduction in mortality compared with those treated with very low or very high amounts of fluid.

New model risk-adjusts sepsis patients for better mortality measurement
The model includes 13 physiologic variables, two physiologic interactions, and 16 demographic and chronic health variables, the most significant being age, metastatic solid tumor, temperature, altered mental status, and platelet count, and could be used to assess sepsis care, researchers said.

High-dose vitamin C not associated with improved mortality in sepsis
A systematic review and meta-analysis found that while high-dose IV vitamin C was associated with less vasopressor use and better SOFA scores, it did not appear to be linked to significant improvement in short-term mortality rates.

Proprietary sepsis prediction model not accurate in external validation study
The Epic Sepsis Model had low sensitivity and did a poor job identifying sepsis in hospitalized patients, researchers found. It also potentially increased alert fatigue, by generating alerts in 18% of hospitalized patients.
